Childcare experts condemn gaming

An influential group of academics and children’s experts have blamed games for rising depression and behavioural difficulties in UK youngsters.

In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, 110 lobbyists implicate fast food, competitive schooling and computer games in what they call “the death of childhood”.

The group, which includes childcare consultant Dr. Penelope Leach and children’s author Jacqueline Wilson, blames politicians and the public for failing to recognise how modern children develop.

The letter says children need “real play” as opposed to “sedentary, screen-based entertainment” and that they are “exposed via the electronic media to material which would have been considered unsuitable for children even in the very recent past”.
